Banks Welcomes Competition
Auckland Mayor John Banks is encouraging anyone wanting to be a part of the new Greater Auckland council to stand in the
upcoming local body elections.
Mayor Banks says voters deserve a quality contest of ideas and has welcomed news that former Government Minister John
Tamihere is considering a run at the Mayoralty.
“I believe Mr. Tamihere will have a substantial following; he is in touch with his community and would be a worthy
challenger.
“The people of Auckland will decide who they believe is best to steer a steady ship through what will be at times rough
waters, and who has the experience to make tough decisions when they matter most. Of course, I believe I am that
person.”
Mayor Banks says he is willing to work with anyone who shares his vision for a Greater Auckland. However he will not be
making any ‘arrangements’ for the role of Deputy or any other role before 1 November.
“My only focus at this stage is my campaign for the Auckland Mayoralty. Every day I am out and about meeting citizens
across this region. They are the only people who I will commit to working with.
“If John Tamihere wishes to support me, that is great. I hope many other Westies will too.
“I would encourage Mr. Tamihere to stand for the Greater Auckland council should he wish to. I have always wanted a
credible Maori candidate to put their hand up. I hope he does. I’ll be ready for the challenge.”
