Waihopai Protesters Acquittal
Right to life and indeed the pro-life movement is opposed to violence against persons and property. The advocacy of social justice should be pursued by peaceful and lawful means. It is never justified to destroy property on the pretext that it is necessary “to prevent others suffering.” We may not do evil in order to obtain a good.
A jury on the 17th March, in the District Court at Wellington acquitted the Waihopai protesters. The defence successfully claimed that the defendants mounted the attack which resulted in wilful damage to government property, amounting to NZ $3.5 million to prevent others suffering. This Court decision is questionable, it presents a dangerous precedent.
The community should be aware that the pro-life movement is committed to defending life. It seeks protection for the right to life of unborn children and the health and welfare of their mothers through peaceful and lawful means. The violence of abortion will not be stopped by using violence against persons or property.
