'Wellywood' sign already creates dissenting voices
Not only has mayoral candidate Jack Yan come out against the idea of a 'Wellywood' sign on airport land in Miramar, some 3,000 netizens have supported a Facebook group against the proposal started by Wellingtonian Anthony Lander.
Mr Yan calls the sign tacky, unoriginal, and not befitting a city that has the pride and forward-thinking of Wellington.
On his blog last night, he wrote, 'why do we need to rip off someone else's idea as a joke (and a second-rate one at that)? … [W]homever raised this is, to me, not used to the idea that New Zealanders are original, innovative people, and we lead. …
'Winning those Oscars was proof enough Wellington doesn't need a sign to be the world's best.'
Others were less diplomatic on the Facebook group, using adjectives ranging from a mild 'embarrassing' to jokes about appending an extra y on to the end.
Website The Wellingtonista noted that Mosgiel already had a similar sign and, in a tongue-in-cheek fashion, said that Wellington could miss out.
