Mayor welcomes news of jobs for Kumeu
Rodney Mayor Penny Webster has welcomed news that Winstone Aggregates is to develop a resource recovery centre at the former Laminex particle board factory site at Kumeu.
“This is fantastic news for Kumeu and the wider region,” Mayor Webster says.
Rodney District Council recently approved Winstone’s application to develop a resource recovery plant on the former Laminex site.
“This is going to see around 20-30 new jobs being created in the local community. It also involves a New Zealand-owned and operated company employing world-leading technology to recycle building materials in a sustainable way.”
Mrs Webster has also welcomed news that Winstone’s is planning to hold an open day at the plant to help locals and others gain a better understanding of exactly what will be happening on site.
“That shows a real openness and willingness by the company to include the local community and a move that should be welcomed by all,” she added
“I encourage people to avail themselves of this opportunity. They should have a look around for themselves and find out exactly what is planned – rather than relying on rumour and ill-informed opinion.”
Mrs Webster believes the new resource recovery plant is not only good news for the local economy in Kumeu, but for the rest of the country as well.
She says it is proof that the Government’s streamlining of the Resource Management Act is actually working and cutting some of the red tape business has complained is been choking real growth in New Zealand.
“The decision to grant approval was made only after the effects of the proposal were carefully scrutinised under RMA requirements,” Mayor Webster added.
“The changes to the RMA allowed Council to grant a non-notified application in line with our existing District Plan – as the effects of the resource recovery centre were assessed as being the same or less than those associated with the previous Laminex plant on this site.”
