National Policy Statement on Freshwater released

National Policy Statement on Freshwater released

"100% pure in twenty years time is not an especially compelling brand proposition for New Zealand" said Gary Taylor, Chairman of the Environmental Defence Society.

Mr Taylor was responding to the release of the Board of Inquiry's report on the Proposed National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management (now available on the Ministry for the Environment's website).

"As a submitter to the Board of Inquiry we can see some real merit in the policies and objectives the Board of Inquiry has proposed" said Gary Taylor.

"However, setting a target date for achievement of improved freshwater quality of 2030 is far too long.

"On the other hand the Board of Inquiry has done a good job in identifying the values of freshwater and setting out some proposed national goals.

"The Minister for the Environment has referred the Board of Inquiry's report to the Land and Water Forum which can be expected to give it careful consideration', Mr Taylor concluded.
