$455,000 boost for Tamaki Drive prompts cyclists

$455,000 boost for Tamaki Dr – and a road code reminder for cyclists

Auckland City Council today committed up to $455,000 to fund road safety improvements along Tamaki Drive.

$330,000 of the funding will be used to widen lane widths along 2.3 kilometres of Tamaki Drive where pinch points exist between cyclists, motorists and parked cars.

These specific parts of Tamaki Dr are Atkin Avenue to Kelly Tarlton’s, Kohimarama Rd to Marua Crescent, and Auckland Road to Sage Rd.

The remaining funds will finance new speed indicator signs, the introduction of some peak-period clearways and adjusted lane markings.

Finance and Strategy Committee chair Douglas Armstrong says improvements have been identified by the council and the Tamaki Drive road safety forum, and can be funded as a result of council savings this year.

Earlier today at the annual Go By Bike Breakfast, council’s road safety spokesperson Councillor John Lister urged the more than 600 cyclists in attendance not to ride through red lights.

“Council has heard first-hand from pedestrians who have been hit by cyclists running red lights along the waterfront, so it’s timely to remind all road users that the rules are there for everyone’s safety.”

The message of ‘Don’t Run the Risk, Don’t Run the Red’ will be promoted at future cycle events and forums.
