'National Not Going Raise GST' - Yeah Right

'National Is Not Going To Be Raising GST' - Yeah Right

Libertarianz leader Richard McGrath today asked the Prime Minister to remember just one of the pledges he made during the 2008 election campaign.

"John Key said at the time: 'National is not going to be raising GST. National wants to cut taxes, not raise taxes.' On the basis of this, many people would have voted National, thinking existing taxes would be reduced, and no new ones would be added."

"If John Key resiles from this, how much credibility can we lend his other election promises?"

"The Libertarianz Party says that taxes should be reduced steadily and eventually eliminated, based on commensurate reductions in government spending."

"If elected, my party would immediately abolish GST, which hits poorer people hardest."

"We would also make the first $50,000 of income tax-free."

"This would facilitate mass redundancies at the Inland Revenue Department, whose employees could then be freed up to seek employment of a less soul-destroying nature."

"Eventually, as government spending was slashed, and services privatised, income taxation itself could be consigned to the dustbin of history, and the IRD quietly shut down."

"If John Key hikes GST, my party will do its utmost to ensure he loses the next election, and that his party is never returned to the government benches."

"The proportion of income a person pays in tax is a measure of the extent to which their life is owned by the state. Libertarianz says you own your life, and transfers of money from the individual to the state should be a matter of voluntary choice."

"Free-market capitalism upholds property rights and self-ownership. Libertarianz supports free-market capitalism, both in principle and in policy. National, on the other hand, give lip service to the free market, but in practice are working to destroy it."

"It's enough to make you vote Libertarianz!"
