The Daktory comes to Dunsterdam
Press Release
Following the announcement from the Auckland cannabis connoisseur's club calling themselves 'The Daktory' of plans to expand nationwide, Otago University NORML is proud to announce a new season for the protest action of cannabis consumption that takes place every Wednesday and Friday at 4:20pm on the Otago University Union Lawn.
'The Daktory has found themselves in a bit of hot water with the police in the last few weeks and we're all too used to that down here', said Otago NORML smokesperson Patrick Macrae.
'But the fact of the matter is, even with the police intervention, the Daktory is still operating, and we still meet twice weekly to openly smoke cannabis'.
'The police have minimal appetite for going after cannabis users, but even if they do, New Zealand cannabis law reform activists will not be swayed from their mission to overturn this unjust prohibition law by any means necessary', says Macrae.
Otago NORML believes that with the continuing expansion of the twice weekly 420 sessions that a formal clubrooms style premise along the lines of The Daktory is the logical next step.
'We've already had informal discussions with real estate agents and there are several potential sites', Macrae said.
After the successful defence of former Otago NORML leader Abe Gray in court for cannabis possession, receiving a Section 106 discharge without conviction, the group has launched a free and anonymous website for fellow cannabis accused to educate about legal procedures and share examples and experiences of being wrung through the already clogged court system. Bushlawyer.co.nz went live on January 10th and interest is steadily growing.
Otago NORML is also joining the scramble to replace the DCC marketing slogan following the announcement to scrap the 'I am Dunedin' campaign.
'The DCC is way behind, we already re-branded Dunedin two years ago with the slogan 'Dunsterdam: The cannabis capitol of the South Pacific', says Macrae.
'Cannabis tourism has been huge for places like Amsterdam and Vancouver, and all the Dunedin tourists already come to the 420 sessions to try and find weed!'
