Two Climate Activists on MFAT roof now

Media Release: Two Climate Activists on MFAT roof now

This morning the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Wellington is being scaled by climate activists. They will be hanging a banner from the building. The will be on the building from 7:30am.

51% of New Zealand’s Greenhouse gases come from agriculture. “At Copenhagen, New Zealand has done nothing about climate change because our economy is based upon dairy farming. For New Zealand to have real cuts in emissions we must end industrial agriculture,” said John Darroch, one of the activists on the building.

“MFAT is New Zealand’s biggest promoter of the dairy industry, selling it as a clean, green product. In reality the dairy industry in polluting our waterways and degrading the environment. It is because of MFAT’s role in promoting the dirty dairy industry that are targeting them today,” continued John.

“The dairy industry will not come under the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) until 2015. We are here to say that by 2015 we will be facing catastrophic climate change. The reality is that we cannot trust governments to take needed action on climate change. We need to take direct action now,” said John.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is at 195 Lambton Quay, Wellington.
