New Bill to show transparency in charitable donations

Arthritis New Zealand congratulates Selwyn National MP, Amy Adams, on the new Fair Trading (Soliciting on behalf of Charities) Amendment Bill.

“This Bill is about informing consumers and rebuilding the public’s trust in the sector of charitable giving through enhanced transparency,” Ms Adams said.

Ms Sandra Kirby, Chief Executive of Arthritis New Zealand, said it was paramount that donors at every level were aware of the percentage of their donation that was going to the charity/cause they are supporting.

“Whilst there may be other gaps in undisclosed fundraising costs, this Bill will certainly close one area that is of concern in the public arena,” Ms Kirby said.

Arthritis New Zealand knows that every time someone chooses to support us, they are choosing between charities. It’s the responsibility of our organisation to make sure that every dollar is used for the cause.

People who donate have the right to ask how much of their money is going to the cause. If the charity can’t answer the question, or if it’s less than 75% of your donation, find another way to donate.

However, it has not been made clear who the disclosures will be made to, or how it will be mandated.
