‘Kiwis for 350’ petition to Parliament gains more than 3,000 signatures in three weeks
The ‘Kiwis for 350’ petition, organised by Dunedin mother and writer Nicky Chapman has gathered over 3,000 signatures in
just three weeks.
‘This shows Kiwis are concerned about climate change, they want to act positively, and they want their Government to do
the same. Given that we got very little publicity, this is a pretty strong message from only three weeks of
campaigning,’ says Mrs Chapman.
‘The petition is about playing our part as hard and well as we can, to shift to a truly sustainable economy. It’s about
agreeing there is a problem, setting a goal, and working together to reach it.
We have great resources in this country – especially our scientific, agricultural, and engineering knowledge, and the
commitment of many caring Kiwis. Let’s build on those resources, and not risk being seen as green shams.’
The petition will be presented to Greens co-leader Russel Norman on Monday the 7th of December at 12.30, outside
Parliament. It will be presented by Nicky Chapman, Caritas, the Catholic agency for justice, peace and development, and
Wellington 350 representatives. Other Christian churches’ representatives and school children will also be present.
‘We’re inviting all MPs to come along too – to show that this issue is too big for politicking. We all have to work on
it together,’ says Nicky Chapman. ‘Nick Smith is currently unavailable but the National MP Hekia Parata, plans to attend
in his place.’
‘Signed petitions have come in from all over the country, and from all kinds of communities. I’ve had great support from
churches, schools, Oxfam, doctors, scientists, environmentalists, community initiatives such as Transition Towns and
Sustainable Dunedin, and many people in the streets, cafes and markets. I’m very grateful and relieved to find so many
people do want to help change the world, for our children’s sake.’
