Children need their fathers

Barnardos New Zealand welcomes the two reports released by the Families Commission today, Supporting Kiwi Dads and Heart and Head: An Explanation of the Meaning of Fatherhood, says Murray Edridge, Chief Executive of Barnardos New Zealand.

“We are very pleased to see both reports focus on fatherhood, illustrating the diversity of fathers in New Zealand today, and that fathers are satisfied with their performance as dads. Both reports encourage fathers to speak out about a variety of fathering areas, including the roles they play for their children and the support they need and receive.”

“The initial bonding phase and on-going attachment between a child and their father as the non-birth parent is crucial. We encourage all fathers to be involved and engaged in raising and nurturing their children from the beginning. It will have a lasting and positive impact on the child’s development. “

“It is vital to support and include fathers as part of the parenting team. Barnardos intends to utilise the findings to ensure our services provide fathers with the support they need,” concludes Mr Edridge.
