Funding Transparency Needed in Aged Care Too
The New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) is pleased the government has announced it is now able to track the funding going into primary health organisations (PHOs) and is thereby able to demand and ensure accountability for public funds.
NZNO calls on the government to put in place the same accountability requirements in relation to residential aged-care funding.
“We know that, year after year, the government provides taxpayer-funded increases to the residential aged-care providers for wage increases for those working in the sector. The reality is that many providers do not pass the funding they receive through to wages and use it instead to fund capital development, increases in shareholder payouts and bottom line profit,” said industrial adviser, Rob Haultain.
“We have been asking for accountability for this funding for years and we do not understand why a government that campaigned so strongly for accountability of government spending is not requiring this accountability in relation to residential aged-care funding,” Haultain said.
