Questions Arise Over Government Prophecies

GREY POWER MEDIA RELEASE 16/10/2009

Questions Arise Over Government Prophecies

New Zealanders are being told that the Budget deficit figures for the year to June show the worst Budget deficit in the country’s history and the recovery will take 20 years. New Zealanders are being told that there will be a massive rise in ACC Levies. New Zealanders are being told that Health Funding will eventually bankrupt the Government.

These prophecies allow some questions to be asked over some areas of Government spending:

• Why do ACC support to such a large extent, victims of Alcohol and Drug related accidents and yet victims of non self- inflicted disabilities have to rely on their own resources to a large degree?

• Doesn’t the Funding of Health through Health Boards and PHO’s need reviewing by an Independent Committee and not a Committee comprising of interest related members?

• Why is there so much funding being granted to Maori Health in areas producing no positive outcomes?

• Why are some Regional Rest Homes that are nurtured by their Communities being refused Government help - yet it is OK to spend over $90,000 per Prisoner per year for the privilege of occupying a cell?

• Why are Prison Inmates given free Dental Treatment?

• Why do itinerant workers from overseas not have compulsory Health Insurance before entering NZ?

• Why are overseas people who commit crimes in NZ not sent back to their own countries for sentence?

• Why is it that there are so many outstanding traffic fines belonging to overseas offenders incurred while visiting NZ?

• Is it fair that people not paying their Fines can be let off repayment of up to and over $100 per hour while Home Careers are expected to accept a pittance for their labours?

These are only some of the anomalies that need addressing before the promised increases in the quality of Living strategies are implemented.
