Montessori children join global song for peace
Over 500 New Zealand Montessori children will be adding their voices to the 60,000 children from Montessori schools around the globe who will Sing Peace Around the World on the United Nations International Day of Peace, September 21.
Children from Montessori early childhood centres and primary classes around New Zealand will begin singing for peace from 11am and will be joined later in the day by Montessori children from 26 countries from around the world from Australia to Sri Lanka, South Africa to Brazil.
The peace song has been written Shelley Murley a Canadian Montessori teacher and musician. Ms Murley has promoted the Sing Peace Around the World peace project through her blogspot http://singpeacearoundtheworld.blogspot.com/
Education and peace is a strong theme of Montessori philosophy and the September 21 event gives children and their communities the opportunity to focus on the intention of peace and to show gratitude for peace through music.
“Only a sane spiritual rebuilding of the human race can bring about peace. To set about this task we must go back to the child.’’ Dr Maria Montessori Education and Peace 1937
Some New Zealand Montessori centres are focusing on peace at the local park, another school is singing at their local mall and many are celebrating with their community at school.
