Time to get positive about Maori representation

The Government's re-affirmation that there will be no reserved Maori seats on the Auckland Supercity Council means it is
now time for Maori to seek positive measures for representation in Auckland and for the exercise of Kaitiakitanga
(guardianship) by Mana Whenua hapu, ACT New Zealand Maori Issues Spokesman Peter Tashkoff said today.
"Rather than continuing with the 'win at all costs' approach to guaranteed Maori seats, Maori leaders could be working
positively to ensure Maori representation within democratic structures – as well as ways for the Kaitiakitanga of
Auckland's Mana Whenua hapu to be recognised in a meaningful and real way," Mr Tashkoff said.
"The Government's decision provides a real opportunity for Maori to lead a charge for realistic and potentially
achievable goals – such as proportional representation. This is an opportunity that Maori leadership should not be quick
to dismiss.
"While it is important in a democratic society to meet the expectations of Maori – and all minorities – in regards to
representation, guaranteed seats are not the way to obtain this. Let's work together now to find a better way to achieve
this goal – one that does not involve winners and losers," Mr. Tashkoff said.
