NZ Association of Bakers Welcomes Government's Approach on Folic Acid
The New Zealand Association of Bakers welcomes the Government’s preference to defer the addition of folic acid in bread for 3 years.
“New Zealanders appreciate the Government preserving their right to choose what they consume in their bread, said Laurie Powell, President of the New Zealand Association of Bakers.
“The Prime Minister was crystal clear in his public message to bread makers about what he expects of us and we heed that message.
“As President of the NZ Association of Bakers, it is my intention to call a Bread Summit for our members to talk about the Government’s decision, and to propose positive industry initiatives.
“In particular we will discuss the role we will play as an industry in promoting the consumption of folate by expectant mothers.
“As an industry over the last 4 years, the Baking Industry has repeatedly offered to significantly extend the range of breads fortified with folic acid on a voluntary basis and to support a targeted advertising campaign with on-pack messages.
“A Bread Summit will give our members an opportunity to discuss these ideas and others.
“Finally, after the summit, we will invite individuals and groups that have been vocal in their support of mandatory fortification to engage with us in the development of a voluntary plan.
“We understand our role in ensuring this works for all New Zealanders, Mr Powell said.
