Grey Power Fury At Education Cuts

Press Release

Grey Power Fury At Education Cuts

Grey Power joins Age Concern in protest to the threatened cuts to tertiary education for those over 65 years. This policy is ageist and discriminatory and attempts to justify it as making the “hard decisions” is ludicrous. How can it be justified that when a person reached the age of 65 years they can no longer learn? The hard decisions required because of the economic climate could include cutting perks allocated to politicians, both present and those retired along with their families a suspension of all Treaty of Waitangi claims for the same period as that set for the contributions to the “Cullen Fund.” In our opinion those would be the hard ones.

The Minister should be reminded that if it were not for the completely unpaid contributions those over 65 years made to the Volunteer Sector, the country would grind to a halt. So why on earth would any government want to curtail their learning capability?
