Pacific Youth Key To Our Future
Porirua is speaking up proudly with an event called Mana Pasifika on Saturday which aims to let Pacific young people in
Porirua know that by making the right choices they can succeed.
This event will focus on enhancing young Pacific people’s health and wellbeing and celebrating their talent. “It’s about
nurturing strong vibrant Pacific young people and being proud about who they are and where they come from” says Emily
Toimata-Holtham, Chairperson, Strong Pacific Families, Porirua and spokesperson for Mana Pasifika.
Statistics show us that New Zealand’s Pacific Population is set to increase by 59 percent or 160,000 people by 2021 .
“Together as a people we have come to realise that investment in our young Pacific population will be one of the keys to
our economic and social success in the future, that is what this event is all about” says Ms Toimata-Holtham.
Porirua community leaders in partnership with young people have been planning and organising Mana Pasifika over the last
six months, it will be the fourth event held since 2006. Organisers are expecting over 1000 young people and their
families to attend the free event at the Elim Christian Centre this Saturday.
Child, Youth and Family, Strong Pacific families, Tumai Mo Te Iwi PHO, Elim Church and other local agencies are
supporting the event which starts at 4pm.
