Shearer concerned about rising unemployment and its effect

Labour's Mt Albert candidate David Shearer is worried about the effects of rising unemployment on the local community.

He says unemployment is going up in the recession, and that damages the community

"Full employment makes a stronger community.

"When unemployment goes up, negative social statistics go up - health effects, housing, crime and other results of increased stress.

"We need investment in jobs and in skills training to reduce the effects of unemployment and to help people who lose their jobs to get back into the workforce quickly.

All communities are affected by unemployment, and those that are affected most need assistance for their needs.

"Unemployment appears to be going up fast among our migrant community, and those communities in Mt Albert need all the help we can bring to reduce rising unemployment and to reduce the effects on people and their community.

"I will be looking at the Government's Budget next week to take positive steps to reduce unemployment in Mt Albert," David Shearer says.
