Sealord confirms jobs going in Nelson: news received badly

Sealord have confirmed the disestablishment of the wet fish night shift with the loss of around 120 jobs.

The announcement was received badly by staff, who were both angry and disappointed says Neville Donaldson, SFWU Assistant National Secretary.

"Although the possible loss of jobs had been a issue of discussion, protest and consultation over the last 3 weeks, workers are never really prepared for the bad news when a decision is made."

"The predominant feeling of workers affected was anger, as they feel they have worked hard and increased productivity over recent years but now that goal is no longer good enough. The company are now seeking increased profits through reduced employment conditions as well."

"Most companies today would give a lot to have productivity increases. But very few if any would expect workers to give up earnings as well".

"Sealord's position puts a whole new definition to the meaning of Corporate greed" says Neville Donaldson.

"In making their announcement the company have stressed the need for workers to agree to an additional NZ$1.8 Million of savings if the remaining workers want to keep their jobs." says Neville Donaldson.
