Nurses to Elect Nurses on to Nursing Council

The New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) applauds the announcement from the Minister of Health Tony Ryall that nurses will now be able to elect their peers on to the Nursing Council of New Zealand.

“The Minister has made a timely and significant move for nursing. Nurses will now have a direct voice in contributing to their own regulation and in upholding patient safety,” said NZNO professional nursing adviser Anne Brinkman.

“We are delighted that elected nurses will have an independent voice on the Council, and through it.  This is something we have sought for the past three years in to ensure that nurses can better engage with the regulatory body and the requisite legal processes. It’s marvellous to see it will now come to fruition,” Brinkman said.
