One Law For All Workers
Media Release: Residents Action Movement (RAM) - 20/3/2009
Workers already in New Zealand should not be discriminated against on the basis of their citizenship, RAM Spokesman Oliver Woods said today.
"Recent calls to fire migrant workers to 'keep jobs' is a crass response to the financial crisis.
"While RAM recognises that immigration of workers is a serious and complex debate, it is simply unfair to talk of giving migrants already working here the boot.
"We don't want to return to a situation like in the late 1970's with the Dawn Raids, where Pacific Island workers who were keeping our economy moving were scapegoated by the National Party.
"At any rate, migrant workers are essential to the well-being of a number of industries in New Zealand and thus should be saluted, rather than attacked for 'stealing' jobs from Kiwis."
