Fairness at Work march in Nelson this Saturday
A march and rally will be held in Nelson this Saturday (21 March) in support of Sealord workers and other workers who are losing their jobs through restructuring.
The theme of the march is "Fairness at Work", and the organisers hope the rally will bring together workers and the community, which has been reeling following the announcement of redundancies at two major firms within days of the Government's job summit.
Neville Donaldson, Assistant National Secretary of the Service and Food Workers Union Nga Ringa Tota, which represents approximately 160 workers who may lose their jobs at Sealord said "The rally is about offering support for workers who are already facing redundancy, but it's also about offering information and support to others who are feeling vulnerable about their jobs and want help and advice. There is a lot of uncertainty in the air in Nelson at the moment, and in the midst of all this the news that night shift workers have been laid off from the Alliance plant earlier than usual this year is setting off alarm bells amongst the people of Nelson. We hope there will be a good turnout on Saturday."
The march will start at Millers Acre at 10am, and end at the 1903 site at the top of Trafalgar Street, where there will be a rally with speakers from a wide range of organisations.
