Easy abortion an abuse of women

“Any move to minimize the health risks of abortion and encourage a woman in a crisis pregnancy to terminate her pregnancy through medical or surgical means, is a cynical abuse of power and has no place in a professional Health Service,” says Annetta Moran, President of Voice For Life.

These comments in response to the news that Family Planning have applied to the Abortion Supervisory Committee for a license to perform non-surgical abortions, reflect the experience of many post-abortion counselors who work with women, often many years after an abortion has taken place 

In seeking a license to offer abortions outside of a hospital environment, Family Planning confirm what has been reported anecdotally for some time by women seeking impartial information, that the possible negative impacts of abortion on women are under-reported to ensure an abortion decision is made ‘easier’.

Mrs Moran adds, “By their own admission, Family Planning say that promoting easy access to abortion is, “consistent with [the] philosophy.”   What they propose in asking for a license to procure abortions by providing controversial abortifacient medication, supervising part of its application and then sending a woman home while the pregnancy aborts sometime during the next few days, offers a lifetime of grief to a woman at her most vulnerable.”

Although numbers of women may "appear to function normally" what emerges in post-abortion counseling, often years afterwards, provides a very different picture.  

The experience of Catherine Gillies, a post-abortion Counselor for over 20 years, illustrates this point.  “Many women become adept at not letting the pain show, and hiding from their grief.  Part of this may be due to the fact that in our society grief following abortion is disenfranchised. Society does not yet fully recognise, openly acknowledge or accept as real post-abortion grief and how it affects women, men and families.  Post-abortion grief is real for numbers of women who have abortions each year, regardless of whether the abortion occurs medically rather than surgically.”
