Hauraki Fisheries And Aquaculture Settlement

Hauraki Fisheries And Aquaculture Settlement

Hauraki Maori Trust Board

Press Release

Nearly $40 m of Hauraki Fisheries assets held up by a recent court battle to benefit 12 Hauraki Iwi can now be used to develop the commercial and social aspirations of the people.

A tribal ballot conducted over the last month has reaffirmed the Hauraki Māori Trust Board’s mandate to bring home the fish & aquaculture settlement.

The board was taken to the Māori Land Court by opponents who didn’t have faith in the board’s capability to receive their fisheries assets.

Hauraki CEO Josie Anderson says, “The board felt fighting in court was wasting iwi money which is why we took the decision back to our people in a process that was democratic and followed due process according to legislation.”

Board chairman Toko Renata says “We took the mandate back to the people and the people have spoken. We are humbled by the results”

He said “This vote clearly reinforces for the Board that it has the people’s confidence to get on and deal with our treaty settlements”.

CEO Josie Anderson says “This mandate is timely for Hauraki given the international meltdown and the pressing need to build long-term opportunities for our people.

Hauraki are the last of the four Tainui Iwi to receive their fisheries assets after Waikato, Ngāti Maniapoto and Ngāti Raukawa.
