Auckland blackout protest

Accused Murderer? Innocent until proven guilty.
Accused Arsonist? Innocent until proven guilty.
Accused File Sharer? Guilty. No trial. No penalty for false accusations.

Think that's wrong? Join us in our protest against the unfair, controversial copyright act amendment section 92 A and C in Auckland this Friday.

"Reason didn't work and the Parliamentary process failed, which is why we in New Zealand now have arguably the world's harshest copyright enforcement law. Sections 92A and C of the amended Copyright Act establish a guilt upon accusation principle that can see anyone accused of "copyright infringement" getting his or her Internet connection severed."

We were the first country to let women vote; we pride ourselves on being clean and green; we're a leader in civil rights; and now, in 2009, we've got arguably one of the most unjust and strict copyright laws in the world. The United Kingdom, Sweden and many other countries have already thrown out the "three strikes and you're out" idea as being inane and impossible to prove. Why us? This could have serious repercussions in society. A recent University of Washington study found that "any internet user could be framed for copyright infringement today", with one of their campus printers being sent an MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) infringement notice. This is unacceptable, and we need to do something about it.

We've confirmed that it will be at Downtown Queen St, starting outside Britomart, 1pm Friday. However, this is subject to change. Another possibility is Saturday at noon if Friday is too unrealistic or we don't get enough people out here.

People are requested to wear BRIGHT clothing, and to bring black placards. We will be supplying flyers, and any other equipment.

We need your support!

 * Write to your MP, share your disgust over this law.

 * Tell your friends! This isn't going to work unless we get enough people. Tell your friends now!

*Join the facebook group, we'll be regularly updating it from now until after the protest: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=55365077395
