Media release:
Update on Mâori Flag from Te Ata Tino Toa (2 items)
1. Te Ata Tino Toa is generously gifting a Waitangi Day present to PM
John Key - a Tino Rangatiratanga t-shirt for him to wear around the
motu this Waitangi Day.
It is a great way for John Key to show his support for the kaupapa of
the Mâori flag. The group was impressed with the 'Pacific' shirt he is
wearing on the cover of today's Dominion-Post.
2. Back by popular demand: The 'Fly the Mâori Flag competition'
Te Ata Tino Toa has announced the 2009 competition for the most
creative display of the Tino Rangatiratanga flag.
Judged by an esteemed panel of judges, points are given for:
- unique location
- appearing where-ever our people are: kaimahi Mâori in their
workplaces; gang pads; on the streets, Waitangi events - anywhere in
the world
- tauiwi can also fly the flag
- style
- size and height
- extra points are given if you can get it on a city council flag Pole.
Previous entries have seen the flag fly in places as far as Antarctica
and Hawai'i. The flag has been flown over, on and under the Auckland
Harbour Bridge, off the Unite Building in Auckland.
Support Tino Rangatiratanga by flying the Tino Rangatiratanga Flag on
Waitangi day in your area. Approach your local kura, kohanga,
businesses, local council etc and let them you want them to share
their local flag poles with Maori, about the positives of building the
relationship with tangata whenua.
Think about adopting local flag poles for the tino flag, and other
high profile places. Even a sticker on your car will support the
kaupapa.
The flag symbolises the struggle for Maori self-determination and
embodies the hopes we have for future generations as a thriving
indigenous nation. Email before the Monday after Waitangi Day.
