CTU petitions Parliament on Fire at Will Act

The Council of Trade Unions has today petitioned Parliament to send the Fire at Will Act to a select committee for proper consideration.

“National drove their employment law changes through Parliament under urgency last week when there was no compelling reason to do so,” CTU president Helen Kelly said.

“We have asked that despite it now being law, it go to select committee for consideration and monitoring. The select committee will have the chance to make recommendations to the Government for changes to the law to make it fair.

“The process will require Government MPs to explain to others why even the most basic right to be given a reason for dismissal was removed with the Act. It will give workers the chance to talk to MPs about the real implications of having no rights at work in the first 90 days and how their interests were completely ignored as this law was pushed through.”

“People deserve a say on this law, and we have petitioned Parliament to ask that the Transport and Industrial Relations examine the Employment Relations Amendment Act to give proper consideration to these issues.”

“Government MPs have the chance to redeem at least a little integrity in this matter by allowing the select committee to consider it,” Helen Kelly said.
