NZMEA: New Cabinet offers promise

New Cabinet offers promise

The new National led cabinet offers some promise to the tradeable economy says the New Zealand Manufacturers and Exporters Association (NZMEA). National appointed Bill English as Minister of Finance, Tim Groser as the Minister of Trade and Gerry Brownlee as the Minister of Economic Development today creating the opportunity for some fresh ideas that will level the playing field for the real economy.

NZMEA Chief Executive John Walley says, “The fastest way to fix the problems around the financial crisis rests with our exporters. Our new leadership needs to give them the support available in other jurisdictions so they are able to compete on a level playing field.”

“There is a mixture of experience and new blood. Tim Groser in particular should understand the issues faced by the real economy. He has a trade background, so he should be aware of the policy settings needed to level the playing field and turn around our historical trade deficits. We are encouraged by John Key’s confirmation that he will take on the Tourism portfolio, which will expose him to the affects of interest and exchange rate volatility on the real economy.”

“There is also an opportunity to deliver on past rhetoric. ACT has been vocal on government waste and now has the opportunity to deliver some major reductions through the simplification of the Resource Management Act and reduced bureaucracy. We hope to see the ACT inspired taskforce deliver some substantial results.”
