National urged to keep to climate commitments

MEDIA STATEMENT

National urged to keep to its climate change commitments

The Environmental Defence Society has reminded Prime Minister elect John Key of the party's commitment to retain the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).

"We note that ACT denies that climate change is happening and has said it wants to cancel the scheme and pull New Zealand out of Kyoto. ACT leader Rodney Hide has put the future of the ETS on the table during the current coalition negotiations," said EDS Chairman Gary Taylor.

"But National has been very clear that it supports an ETS albeit with some changes. At a seminar run by EDS on 30 October, Hon Dr Nick Smith reiterated that commitment in an unequivocal way.

"Clearly there will be support from other parties in the Parliament for retention of the scheme. It would be a very bad start indeed if National was to cave into ACT's demands before it has even formed a government.

"A centre-right government does not have to pose a threat to the environment. National has made much of its new "blue-green" credentials in the run-up to the election. We are looking for it to start as it intends to finish: keeping to its promises and not being led astray on environmental policy by ACT," Mr Taylor concluded.
