Kahawai Legal Challenge goes on.

Kahawai Legal Challenge goes on.

The Kiwi Party
Press Release
October 4, 2008

Kiwi Party leader Larry Baldock welcomed the news on Friday that the Supreme Court had made a milestone decision to accept an application to review the 2008 Appeal Court kahawai decisions. The Supreme Court has granted leave to appeal against the Court of Appeal’s decision.

“I congratulate the Joint appellants to the Appeal Court decision, the New Zealand Big Game Fishing Council and the New Zealand Recreational Fishing Council along with Option 4 and Ngapuhi who have given significant backing to the Kahawai Legal Challenge (KLC) from the beginning.

“I agree with Richard Baker, President of the NZ Big Game Fishing Council when he said “This is an historic day for all New Zealanders.”

“The KLC has been a long battle by New Zealanders who are simply trying to defend the inalienable right of all future Kiwis to fish and provide for their wellbeing.

“The Kiwi Party strongly supports those rights and has made it very clear in our Outdoor Recreation policies that we will stand up for non commercial fishing (recreational fishers) to ensure their common law right to fish for food is clearly reflected in legislation.

"We will be waiting with great interest on the final outcome of the challenge now that it can be heard before the Supreme Court,” said Mr Baldock.
