NO COFFEE FOR DEFENCE PERSONNEL

Even New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) personnel in Afghanistan got behind a fundraiser for the charity Cure Kids this week despite having to miss out on their morning coffee.

The fundraiser called ‘Help Cure Kids Coffee Day’ asked NZDF personnel to donate the cost of a cup of coffee towards the fundraising efforts of the three Defence Force teams who will taking part in the Accor $10 Queenstown Challenge from 1-3 October.

Each team in the Accor $10 Queenstown Challenge has to raise $7,000 prior to the event. Funds raised will be used for medical research into life-threatening conditions that affect children.

“We’re on instant coffee over here in Bamiyan and there is no skilled barista preparing it for us; however we did our bit for the ‘Help Cure Kids Coffee Day’ on 22nd July and raised just over NZ $200.00”, said Warrant Officer Ross Connochie, who is currently in Afghanistan.

Each team participating in the Accor $10 Queenstown Challenge is given $10 and has to use various modes of transport to get from Auckland to Queenstown in three days. There are 35 teams taking part and the team that arrives in Queenstown with the most points after undertaking a wide variety of challenges on the way will be the winner.

The NZDF teams are Navy: Sub-Lieutenant Fraser Toulmin and Sub-Lieutenant Darcy Topp, Army: Lieutenant Christian Anderson and Bas Bolyn, Air Force: Corporal Lydia Savage and Pilot Officer Sean McKeogh.
