New Electoral Rolls Open For The Public To View

The Electoral Enrolment Centre is urging people to check just released electoral rolls, as another milestone towards the 2008 general election is reached.

Preliminary electoral rolls with the details of everyone currently enrolled are now available for viewing at local PostShops, public libraries, Registrar of Electors’ offices and district courthouses.

“By law we must produce a complete list of all those currently enrolled to vote and make it publicly available. Printing of the electoral rolls is a key step in the New Zealand electoral process,” says Murray Wicks, National Manager of the Electoral Enrolment Centre.

“People can check their details or the details of others to see whether they are enrolled and whether their details are correct,” says Mr Wicks.

“If your details are wrong, you can update them by filling in an enrolment form and sending it to us or going online at www.elections.org.nz.

“If your details don’t appear then you’re not enrolled. It’s still not too late to enrol for this year’s election,” says Mr Wicks. “We are urging people to enrol now to ensure they are ready to vote whenever the election is held.”

The Minister of Justice, Annette King, backed the call for people to check their details.

“Making the electoral rolls publicly available for people to check and inspect is an important aspect of our open democratic process,” says Ms King. “If your name isn’t on the printed roll you are not correctly enrolled to vote.”

Enrolling is easy. Enrolment forms are available by freetexting your name and address to 3676, going online to www.elections.org.nz, at any PostShop or by calling 0800 ENROL NOW (0800 36 76 56).

Final electoral rolls to be used on Election Day will close about a month before Election Day. Everyone who enrols in time to go on the final printed electoral rolls will get an EasyVote information pack in the mail, which will make voting easier.
