PSA Says DOC Should Not Have To Cut Jobs
"We are very disappointed that DOC is forced to cut jobs in part because of a forecast shortfall caused largely by one-time events - for example, fighting an unusual number of forest fires this year," says PSA National Secretary Brenda Pilott. The shortfall is $5.7 million in the first year, rising to $8 million in year 3.
DOC has today confirmed that 60 jobs will be disestablished as a result of an internal review. While some of the changes aim to align DOC activity more closely to its strategic direction, a number of jobs will be cut purely to make savings.
"We were pleased the Government did provide extra funding for DOC in the Budget but it appears it wasn't enough."
"DOC is a well-run organisation that provides major environmental, economic, social and cultural benefits to New Zealand."
Brenda Pilott says the PSA will be supporting its members affected by the job cuts, while PSA members at DOC will continue to work with the department to deliver services New Zealanders consistently say they value. In a 2007 study, New Zealanders rated DOC workers highest in a satisfaction survey - at 91 per cent.
Brenda Pilott says the important work DOC does is a prime example of why New Zealand needs to maintain strong public services.
"It's vital we ensure public services have the resources and staff they need to meet the economic, environmental and social challenges that New Zealand faces," says Brenda Pilott.
