Bunnings And Save The Children’s Myanmar Response Day

New Zealanders can help raise much needed funds for those affected by Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar (Burma) by buying a sausage at Bunnings and Save the Children’s Myanmar Response Day – Friday 23 May.

“Bunnings’ network of stores New Zealand wide is joining forces with Bunnings stores in Australia to host Australasia’s biggest sausage sizzle with every cent raised being donated directly to Save the Children’s appeal,” said Brad Cranston, Bunnings New Zealand General Manager.

“Save the Children responded immediately to the devastating destruction of Cyclone Nargis and have proven themselves to be a strong partner. We are hoping to raise more than $100,000 across New Zealand and Australia in support of their great work.”

Unofficial UN figures claim the number killed by the cyclone is close to 200,000, John Bowis, Executive Director of Save the Children New Zealand, says: “There are possibly 220,000 still missing and more than 1.5 million people have no drinking water, food or shelter. Up to 40 per cent of those affected are children.”

“We need urgent assistance to help provide food, water, materials and basic household items. Save the Children has worked in Myanmar for 13 years. We have 500 local staff in the country who are working to get aid to as many people as possible. Funds will be driven towards those areas worst affected, particularly in the Rangoon and West Delta divisions.”

New Zealanders can make a donation simply by visiting their local Bunnings store on Friday 23 May and buying a sausage for $2.50. ‘Save the Children’ labelled buckets will be made available if customers wish to donate an additional amount – a gold coin would be greatly appreciated.

“Bunnings’ team members across New Zealand will be on hand to man the barbeques and we would love to see as many people help the people of Myanmar by buying a sausage or two,” said Brad Cranston.
