PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 15 MAY 2008
Jigsaw CEO Strategic Relationships Supports Dr Hone Kaa
Jigsaw CEO Strategic Relationships, Tau Huirama stands beside Dr Hone Kaa and Dr Cindy Kiro.
Mr Huirama’s statements follow criticism directed at Dr Hone Kaa for urging all Maori to oppose smacking.
“It is encouraging that Dr Hone Kaa, a respected academic and a past Arch Deacon of the Anglican Church, is taking this stand against non violent parenting as pressure continues from some groups to revisit the legislation around smacking.
It is heartening that research has clarified that our Maori ancestors of the past didn’t believe that hitting or smacking children was acceptable. This is a model of how we can be within our families now. It is only by taking a leading role on this issue, for the safety and benefit of all our children, that we can make positive change.”
“Dr Kaa’s calling for a cross party meeting with Maori politicians, to maintain the repeal of Section 59, is a positive step forward. Having our children safe, healthy and thriving must be our ultimate goal.”
