TEAR Fund getting around Myanmar difficulties

PRESS RELEASE

May 8, 2008

TEAR Fund getting around difficulties delivering aid in Myanmar

As TEAR Fund NZ hits its 24-hour target of raising more than $25,000 for Myanmar’s cyclone victims, its local partner is scaling-up its response as the death toll climbs.

Executive Director of TEAR Fund Stephen Tollestrup said, while aid agencies have encountered difficulties and delays getting basic aid and supplies into the country, our partner in Myanmar is raising cash to purchase items locally to meet the need of the Burmese people.”

TEAR Fund is boosting its response as its country partner looks to work with local authorities, the UN and international NGO coordinating groups. TEAR Fund is adopting both a short-term and long-term rehabilitation focus, but this hangs on obtaining the necessary authorisations.
