4 May 2008. The Family Party will hold a party conference (open to the public) on Saturday 17th May at the Nga Tapuwae Community Centre in Mangere. The date coincides with The UN's International Day of the Family (Families Day), which is being celebrated over the week in New Zealand.
The conference will feature keynote speeches from leader Richard Lewis, deputy leader Paul Adams and Mangere Candidate Galumalemana Jerry Filipaina. The program will be mixed with culture-group performances and music by South Auckland's 2008 Pacific Music Award finalists, Cydel.
Besides outlining some of its major policies, the party will be staking a claim for the Mangere (Jerry Filipaina) and Manukau (Richard Lewis) electorates, as well as East Coast Bays (Paul Adams).
"This conference as an opportunity to benchmark key policies and convince voters why they need Family Party candidates in Parliament in 2008. We're excited about our policies and have a fantastic team of people who have been working tirelessly on the ground to make it happen. Now it's time to take our campaign to the next level," says Mr Lewis.
Examples of policies the party intends to outline include:
v Removing GST on basic (primary staple) food groups, infant and elderly necessities, household energy, rates, and off the excise duty on fuel
v Opposing carbon taxes being imposed on New Zealand businesses, families and individuals
v Repeal the Prostitution Law Reform Act (that was passed by a single vote) to protect vulnerable women and children
"Families in our communities are hurting in many different ways. The Family Party is focused on policies that will take the pressure off families and improve the quality of life for our children and elderly. It's time to put the best interests of families ahead of political expedience and focus on the issues that matter most in our communities," says Mr Lewis.
