New SuperGold Card discounts are a bright spot in what's shaping up to be a hard winter for seniors, says Age Concern.

"Free off-peak public transport and more money into hearing aids will be welcome. We look forward to getting details in the Budget," says Age Concern New Zealand's Alistair Stewart.

"We held our Annual Age Concern Conference last week and our people tell us hearing aids, vision aids and teeth care are priorities for older people.

"These can cost thousands, and for some older people this is more than they can ever afford. This can mean they can't see, they can't hear, or they can't eat and their quality of life is ruined.

"Money issues are some of older people's greatest concerns, so it's vital that companies start offering real discounts on energy and everyday shopping items through SuperGold Card.

"Older people are searching for discounts and companies who join will find that seniors are very loyal consumers.

"We're urging suppliers to get behind SuperGold Card."

Age Concern fears that some older people will face real hardship this winter from the combined effects of food and power price rises, extra petrol costs, and big rent increases for some tenants.

"A senior has an annual income of around $14,000 and most older people have very little extra income above that.

"Could you live on $14,000 a year?" Alistair Stewart asks.
