Proposed Family Court Rules Means Domestic Safety And Child Safety
Tau Huirama, Jigsaw CEO Strategic Relationships, believes the family courts proposal to crack down on people who breach
protection orders, in the domestic violence arena is a positive move.
Mr Huirama’s comments follow Principal Family Court Judge, Peter Boshier’s call for the Justice Ministry to formalize
this process which helps to recognise when people breach protection orders because this is a serious matter.
“Judge Boshier is right. Sometimes there has been no punishment for people who breach court orders. If this can be
rectified this will be an encouragement for people not to breach their protection orders.”
Mr Huirama thinks that this strategy would mean addressing domestic violence to focusing on domestic safety for women
and children.
“Protection orders are often issued where men have been violence to women and children. These orders are meant to
protect them from hurt. Having the court orders enforced more rigorously so that women and children are safe and not
harmed would be another way New Zealand can show that ‘It’s Not OK’. This would mean that more families can live in a
safe environment and children can grow up to be the best person they can possibly be.”
