Criminal Justice Advisory Board -- An Opportunity

Criminal Justice Advisory Board - Another Opportunity to Influence Law and Order Policy

The Rethinking Crime and Punishment Project fully supports the establishment of the Criminal Justice Advisory Board. "It has come not a moment too soon" said Kim Workman, Project Leader.

"The Board has been established to facilitate constructive community dialogue about criminal justice issues and solutions, and also to develop greater public consensus on what issues are important in bolstering confidence in the criminal justice system."

"One of the current urgent needs is to promote rational discussion within the community, about "what works", and to assist local communities to develop their own solutions to local offending. When 'Rethinking' was first established in late 2006, it identified one of its key roles as promoting public debate and dialogue, and involving the community in the criminal justice system. The Project has been limited by resources, but has done what it can to promote alternative ideas and approaches, and provide some clearer thinking about "what works".

The Board members have been well chosen, and all members bring a range of networks and experience to the forum. David Oughton is a highly experienced
former public servant, who has an intimate knowledge of the justice system. His leadership will be pivotal to the board's success.

This is a pragmatic response to the Ombudsman's call for a Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Justice System. While it falls short of our preference, it has the potential to assist the Justice Sector Ministers to meet immediate challenges.
