One Man, One Bike: Planting Trees to Save the Planet

Iranian Red Crescent Society member Mohamad Tajeran is currently biking the length and breadth of New Zealand as part of a world tour to promote the planting of more trees to help save the planet.

Since starting his journey in Iran on 2 December 2006, Mohamad has been on his bike for over 485 days. He arrived in New Zealand this week and as part of his campaign he will spend the next two months biking around the country planting trees.

This week Mohamad arrived in Auckland and biked to Hamilton where he will take part in a children’s cycling event tomorrow. His journey through New Zealand continues south to Wellington, then down the West Coast of the South Island, then through Southland, Canterbury and back up north via the East Coast. He flies out of Auckland bound for Australia in June.

While he may have be on his bike for nearly 18 months Mohamad says he is looking forward to his time in New Zealand and enjoyed the taste he got of the country on his journey from Auckland to Hamilton.

“The most beautiful part of this trip has been the fact that everyday is different with something changing everyday.”

Mohamad undertook his journey with the desire to encourage people all over the world to take better care of the planet. During his stay in New Zealand Mohamad will be calling on schools, community groups and individuals to join him in planting trees to help the environment.

Mohamad has already biked through and planted trees in countries such as Pakistan, India, Nepal, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos. His world journey continues after he leaves New Zealand when he heads to Australia.
