CYFS Response To Stuff Article On Mona Kahui

To be attributed to Ray Smith, Deputy Chief Executive, Child, Youth and Family:
In response to article 'Kahui Name Torments Young Mum' 02/04/08 – Eastern and Bays Courier / Stuff Website
"I am extremely disappointed that allegations against Child, Youth and Family were raised in the media without giving us a right of reply.
"The result is misleading and does Child, Youth and Family a disservice
"Mona Kahui is aware why Cyene was placed in care. Both were living in the house where Chris and Cru Kahui were murdered. The perpetrator was unknown meaning both Cyene and her cousin were removed for their own safety. Other concerns meant both were admitted to hospital that night.
"Our actions were about the safety of these children. The NZ public expect no less of us.
"Yes, we placed Cyene with extended whanau out of Auckland. She needed protection from the intense public and media scrutiny.
"I accept that the months following Cyrene being taken into care were hard for Ms Kahui, however Child, Youth and Family's priority was the safety and wellbeing of a vulnerable baby girl.
"We work hard to reunite families, however parents must be willing to change their behaviour and their lifestyle for them to become the mums and dads their children deserve.
"It appears that Ms Kahui is making that transition and for that she should be congratulated.
