The Kiwi Party believes that Unions are "on the money" regarding their collective desire to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour.

"While the minimum wage was lifted on 1/4/08 to $12 per hour, this rate is so far behind the real cost of living, that I am calling on the Government to lift the minimum wage to $15 per hour" says Kiwi Party Leader Larry Baldock.

"While the Kiwi Party support the unions call for this increase, we are also mindful that employers cannot be expected to shoulder the costs for this alone in these uncertain economic times".

"The lowering of the company tax today to 30 cents will certainly help to offset some costs, but there will be many employers who do not benefit from this reduced rate".

"We believe the Government should utilise it’s huge surplus to give a tax credit for every employer to cover the cost of any increase in the payroll expenses incurred by lifting the minimum wage to $15".

"If we are to lift our wages to address the flow of our labour across the Tasman it must start at the bottom of the wage scale". Then, as a rising tide that lifts all boats, we can see wages increase across the board over time. The Government can then further reduce Company tax and give rebates to employers to offset these cost as the economy adjusts over time".

"Labour and National are both out of touch with how difficult it is for those in low paid jobs to support themselves and their families. It is no wonder that the prospect of greener pastures in Australia attract so many".

"We do not have time for more and more talk about this - immediate action is needed”.

"Furthermore, the Kiwi Party will support tax cuts that make sense and deliver assistance to those most in need" said Mr Baldock.
