Labour MP In Support Of the Maori Flag
Te Ata Tino Toa has sent their mihi to a new Labour MP who has voted in Manukau City to support Mâori flags.
Manukau City Councillor Sio voted against a motion last week to ban Mâori flags from Manukau City Council.
He also sits on Councils' Treaty committee that has been promoting the flying of Mâori flags from council buildings. On
the TOW committee Councillor Sio also supported motions to investigate the flying of Mâori flags.
Councillor Sio is due to be sworn in as the latest Labour list MP.
"We are glad Labour MPs are moving closer to supporting the Mâori flag, as the Mâori Party and Greens have done," says
spokesperson Teanau Tuiono.
Mr Tuiono is a native of Manurewa now living in Palmerston North.
"Maybe it's time for us to canvass other Pacific and Mâori Labour MPs to see if we can get them on board." The group
says that every voice in support of Mâori flags makes a difference.
Manukau has the largest Mâori population in the World and is in fact the Polynesian capital of the world we feel that it
would be more than appropriate that Manukau City Council policy reflects the demographics of this area. The debate in
Manukau is in part a response to a request by Te Ata Tino Toa to Council to fly the Mâori flag on Waitangi Day.
