Mangere residents rally against boy racers

Mangere residents rally against boy racers

29 Feb 2008. Thursday's serious car crash in Crawford Avenue, Mangere Bridge, has been the catalyst for local residents to take action against boy-racers and speeding vehicles in their street. Six people were taken to hospital, one in critical condition, after a car veered off the street and ploughed through a fence into a residential dwelling. The car was being driven erratically and at excessive speed.

Richard Lewis says the Mangere-based Family Party has responded to calls from local residents wanting action to resolve the boy-racer problem.

"Jerry Filipaina and I have coordinated a survey and petition on behalf of the Crawford Avenue residents who are asking for immediate and effective action to address traffic and pedestrian safety concerns. This particular street is characterised by large families with a lot of young children. It appears boy-racers and speeding vehicles are attracted to the long, sloping straight with absolutely no regard for the safety of local residents. I have reports of vehicles racing side-by-side in both lanes. It's that reckless," says Mr Lewis.

On Monday evening Mr Lewis will present a petition and the survey results to the Mangere Community Board during the public forum. It will detail the nature of concerns and general recommendations to resolve the issue. "I'm confident that the local authorities will take this issue seriously enough to remedy the problem and ensure these families feel safe again," he added.

Over 100 Crawford Avenue (adult) residents have already signed the petition, which Lewis aims to complete by Monday in time for the Mangere Community Board meeting.
