Sallies post Christmas ‘most wanted’ list

Wellington, 16 December 2007 – The Salvation Army has released its annual list of ‘missing’ people who are being desperately sought by loved ones wanting to reestablish contact.

Salvation Army Family Tracing Service Director Major Bronwyn McFarlane, says that the list of 74 names represents many of the Army’s toughest cases, as well as a selection of new cases.

‘We are appealing to the public to look carefully at the names on the list and contact us if they can offer leads on the whereabouts of any of the missing people.

‘The list includes some of our more difficult cases, where we are having real trouble locating the people. Any information, no matter how small, could help us to find a missing person and, where they are willing, to reunite them with their family.’

The list includes for each person their full name, year and place of birth, and regions in New Zealand which they are or have been associated with. More than one region may be listed where people have moved around. Photos are available in a few cases.

Major McFarlane says that the Family Tracing Service has registered 235 enquiries so far this year – a six-year high – from family members who want to reestablish broken family connections. Each year the service successfully traces more than a hundred people.

‘We use a variety of techniques to trace missing people, including tips from the public which sometimes provide the vital clue that can solve a case.

‘More than three quarters of people located are willing to establish or reestablish contact, but it’s our policy that their whereabouts is only disclosed to family with their consent.’

Major McFarlane says that people lose touch for a variety of reasons, such as when relationships break down or grow apart, or simply through failing to keep in touch when moving to a different town or country.

More details about the Family Tracing Service, including how to request help in finding a missing relative, are available online at www.salvationarmy.org.nz
