SOLO-NZ Press Release: Neo-Luddite Greens Cower in Fear of GE

Sue Kedgley, were she living in another time—say 12000 years ago during the Neolithic revolution—would be warning us all against the dangers of this new-fangled thing called 'agriculture,' preferring instead to rely on nature and nature alone. Picking what berries and fruits they could find growing wild (but eschewing the abundant meat storming across the plains of course). Kedgley and her tribe of evolutionary dead-enders would have been ignored and consigned to the 'failed' dustbin of life. But not before proclaiming loudly (well, okay grunting and gesturing) her rejection of the agricultural revolution as evil.

"Unfortunately for us, Kedgley is alive and well in this era," Says SOLO spokesman Lance Davey.

"And she and her tribe of knuckle-dragging, alarmist cave-things and their activist supporters, are screeching, grunting, throwing rocks and waving their clubs at the GE revolution—the very same GE revolution that is responsible for higher-yield, denser crops, meaning less land is being cleared for agriculture. The GE revolution that is providing cheaper food in larger quantities for more people than ever before. The GE revolution that is the bleeding edge of man's mastery over his environment. A mastery that for hundreds of thousands of years has proved necessary for man's survival.

"And they hates it precious! Nasty, evil, pernicious GE. Having failed to keep New Zealand 'GE Free,' Kedgley and her neo-Luddite comrades are demanding more stringent labelling of foods containing safe, approved and environmentally friendly GE products. They want to make life as difficult and expensive as possible for manufacturers using GE ingredients; after all, if organic, low-yield, environmentally damaging produce can't compete economically, then they have no option but to hobble and kneecap the competition.

"Make no error about the eco-fascists—they care less for the environment and man's ability to survive and thrive in it and more about nature as some kind of deity and the relegation of man back to the status of dumb animal, subject to the slings and arrows of harsh Mother Nature."
