Most Adults Support Fireworks Ban

Most New Zealanders aged 18 or over (63%) support a ban on firework sales to the general public and only allowing organised public displays of fireworks.

This was the result of independent research company UMR’s latest nationwide public opinion poll.

The poll also shows those who strongly support (40%) a ban outnumber those who strongly oppose one (20%) by two to one.

Females are more supportive of a ban than males with 61% supporting a ban compared to 55% of males. However, 48% of females strongly support a ban compared to 32% of males.

Support for a ban also increases with age. 48% of those under 30 years of age support a ban compared to 78% of those over 60.

The telephone poll was conducted between 8-13 November of a nationally representative sample of New Zealanders aged 18 years and over. It has a margin of error of +3.6%.
